Running the DnD 5e Adventure “Tomb of Annihilation”, is a fun and rewarding experience for players and dungeon masters alike. But, it’s a difficult module for the players, since characters can’t be revived. It also boasts it’s own “meat grinder mode”, where death saves only succeed on a roll of 15 or higher. Well, I read the module and thought to myself: “What if I made it, moreeeee difficult? How bad could that be…”
Queue evil DM noises…
And then I asked my group to create the most min-maxed characters they could, in preparation for a deadly campaign. everything official is allowed, as well as some homebrew, if checked with the DM. Being a devoted group of character addicts, they did NOT disappoint. Only then did I explain the premise of the adventure, and tell them:
- You only get ONE death save, but it succeeds on a regular 10+
- The optional rules for massive damage are enabled, and if you come back from the brink of death, you gain a wound
Keep in mind that just because optional combat rules are active, doesn’t mean you should leave out the opportunity for your players to roleplay and bargain with foes!
Thanks for reading!
Go try it out!
