Google Play Store vs Third Party Apps - Mainly Blogging

To have access to Google Play Store you will need a Gmail account. You can always register one by visiting gmail.com. Do login using the Gmail app installed in your android smart phone, if you already have an account.

Now, should you continue to download apps and games from third-party sites? Or should you download apps and games from Google play store only? Here’s what I think…

Firstly, let me tell you a bit about Google play store and third-party websites. Google play store is the leading and most popular marketplace for downloading and installing apps and games. It even has an app that comes pre-installed in most android smart phones. I believe you already know the use of the Google play store app. If not, well… You can use the Google play store app to get apps, games, music, movies, books and other digital content.

On the other hand: Third party sites are websites like AppsApk, Mobango, Yandex store (and so on) that allow developers to publish their apps and games without paying any fee. Users can therefore get the published apps and games as APK files.  Third-party sites are great for developers who don’t afford the Google developer console fee ($25) even though I think it’s cheap. Actually, let me correct that! Maybe they do afford the fee but they just don’t want to pay – who knows?

Difference between a third-party site and Google play store.

At a third-party site  you can create an account and publish your games and apps for free. Whereas, at Google play store you have to pay a once off fee ($25) to be able to publish your apps in their marketplace.  The Google play store has a wide audience and your digital content will be exposed to a lot of people. Unfortunately, I can’t say the same about third-party sites, because some of them are startups.

Information about Third Party Websites

Downloading Apps and games from third-party sites is considered unsafe for a couple of reasons. Usually the reasons are that the APK files published there may be from a harmful (untrusted) source, or even have viruses. This is true but, it is rare to find APK files that have viruses! Or so I think.

What I know is that, these third-party sites have strict rules and they always check the apps and games for viruses before publishing them. The only problem is that we don’t know the services or programs they use to check the apps and games. And because of this, we can never be sure if the apps and games published are free from viruses and spam or not. So, it is safe to say that you are taking a risk when you download or install apps and games from third-party sites.

The Google Play Store

Google Play Store is a trusted marketplace for downloading apps and games. The fact that its app comes pre-installed on android phones – makes it easy to get apps and games. And without a doubt, downloading apps and games from play store is the way to go but it does have disadvantages too.

Let’s have a look at advantages and disadvantages of using Google play Store and Third Party sites to download apps and games.

  1. Google play store is a trusted marketplace and is safer compared to third parties sites. However, I would like to believe that there are third-party sites that have clean APKs.
  2. When you use Google Play Store to download apps or games you won’t have a copy (file) of the app or game. Whereas, if you use a third-party sites you will have the APK file(s) on your media card (as long you don’t delete it). Having a copy of the app or game you downloaded is good for backup reasons.
  3. Using Third party sites will save your phone’s space, as it will use your media card space (and not your phone’s storage). If you use Google play store you will get the ‘There’s no enough space’ message more often.
  4. If you use third-party sites your smart phone might go on a brick state and you might have to consider a flashing procedure to fix it – learn more on this post.
